Student Articulation and Argumentation in a CGI Classroom:
A look at current research and best practices on children's mathematical thinking through the lens of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)
Keynote Speaker: Megan Franke, UCLA Professor and CGI Math Expert
The workshop begins with two 45-minute breakout sessions with UCLA Lab School teachers.
Choose ONE topic from each session:
Breakout Session A
Counting and Number Sense with Young Children - Grades PreK-1; all levels of experience with CGI
In this session we will explore different ways that young children develop number sense, and how we support them in the discovery of wide range of strategies that helps them to demonstrate their thinking.
CGI and the Common Core - All elementary; all levels of experience with CGI
In this workshop, we will explore how to meet the Common Core standards while using CGI practices.
Children's Strategies and Problem Types for First-Timers to CGI - Grades K-2; new to CGI
In this workshop we will explore the developmental sequence of problem solving strategies children typically use, and then examine the addition and subtraction word problem types. These are the two fundamental pieces of knowledge that provide the framework for all further CGI work. The goal is to help teachers to identify and understand children's thinking in action, which then informs our responses to children, and the problems we pose next. This workshop is a good first step for those new to CGI.
Building a CGI Classroom Community - Grades 1-4; all levels of experience with CGI
In this workshop, we will explore ways to create a thinking and supportive classroom community. We will share strategies to encourage collaboration among students. We will demonstrate how students identify, name and compare problem-solving strategies to build efficacy in their CGI work.
Breakout Session B
Student Articulation and Argumentation in an Upper Grades CGI Classroom - Grades 4-6; all levels of experience with CGI
In this workshop we will demonstrate how we have been incorporating CGI problems in the current upper elementary math curriculum, including how we set up and foster a safe culture for problem solving. We will also show how students make a claim defending their strategies and/or results using factual evidence both orally and in writing.
Formative Assessment in CGI - All elementary; experienced with CGI
This session will focus on formative assessment in CGI and its usefulness in informing instructional planning to better the needs of all students.
Math Inquiry - All elementary; experienced with CGI
In this session, we will explore how math, particularly CGI strategies, can be used to support the inquiry process.
Problem Solving Strategies - Grades 1-4; all levels of experience with CGI
This is an interactive session in which participants will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to analyze the continuum of problem solving strategies and student articulation. A variety of approaches to support students in unpacking word problems will also be explored.
